OTHER INFORMATION

Some colours - usually reds, oranges, violets etc - will strike (complete the chemical reaction from a colourless form to the colour) upon reheating the glass - sometimes this will happen in the annealing kiln but usually in the glory hole - but over working will result in browns or straw colours etc.

Any striking colours are identified in its description.

Striking Colours

A clean, possibly hissing, highly oxidising flame can prevent dark colours - blacks and cobalt blues and rubies - from becoming dull, grey or muddy or brown. If you do not want gold and silver colours reducing you may need an overly oxidised flame to prevent a dull surface

Highly Oxidising Flame

Some colours - typically those named “silver”, “gold”, “iris” - if worked using a long lazy flame searching out oxygen, will have the metals in the surface reduced to create a metallic surface. I.e this can enable the colour to be seen on the outside of the piece and the metal on the inside etc.

Reducing Flame

Most of the colours do contain lead but not all of them - particularly the opaque reds, yellows, oranges and browns which contain selenium. Some of the lead bearing colours can be ordered without the lead. The individual colour details will have this information

Please Note

• The Kugler Colours are produced in Germany Spezialglashutte Kugler Colours GmbH - mainly as high quality overlay colours for crystal glass manufacturers and artistic blowing studios.
• All the glasses are handmade, many of the colours are based on recipes kept strictly secret and passed on over a number of generations.
• Established in 1985 after the retirement of Klaus Kugler, the operation moved to the new factory in 1995 where new environmental and quality control procedures were able to be introduced.
•  Coefficient of Expansion is measured in different ways by each company : Kugler and Gaffer colours are both slightly softer than Reichenbach which can be 4-6 points lower than Kugler. The Opaques can be at the lower end of the acceptable range and the transparents at the higher end.
• Kuglers COE when measured over the temperature ranges stated is approximately as follows:-
• 0-300oC  is approx 93 +/-2 x 10-7/K
• 20-300oC it is approx 96 +/-2 x 10-7/K
• 20-400oC it is approx 100 +/-2 x 10-7/K.  
• Kugler coloured blowing glasses are used widely by people using 24% cullet from Dartington, Philips 3300 non-lead pellets (Gaffer refers to them as Gaffer pellets), Kugler Clear Nuggets from Glassworks Services, Glasma 702A and Glasma Nuggets. Crystallica / Bomma appears to suit Reichenbach more than Kugler or Gaffer and are not recommended for use with Kugler.

Kugler Blowing Colours

• Glassworks Services Handmade holds in stock several tonnes of Kugler’s colours in rod, powder, and in K00 to K2 sizes. We have some of the larger sizes for regular customers but generally we do not stock K3, K4 or K5.
• We order weekly from Kugler so can get most of the colours and sizes for you within 4 - 6 weeks.
• Orders received by 10 am are usually despatched the same day.
• We stock the most popular 100 of the 160+ so we do not guarantee to have in stock the items you want so please plan ahead when possible as we might have to order them in.
• Kugler do not guarantee colour match from batch to batch or even within a batch so neither can we.

• Rods are approximately 30cm long by 3cm diameter and weigh typically 450-600gm each.
• When ordering rods we supply in full rods or to the nearest full rod if you order in kilos.
• Powders and frits/grits can be ordered from as little as 500gm.
